Abstract

Simple models to predict spring wheat yield have usually used a different procedure to predict grain yield than that of above-ground dry matter (Hanks, 1974). The prediction of grain yield has been related to predictions of water stress at different growth stages whereas the prediction of total dry matter yield has been related to total seasonal stress. The use of more complicated models to predict grain yield is justified only if there is a difference in the harvest index (ratio of grain to total dry matter yield) resulting from plant water stress.
