Abstract
Methaqualone was introduced into the United States in the 1960s as a nonbarbiturate sedative/hypnotic. Although originally considered to have low potential for abuse, methaqualone quickly gained the reputation of producing a “high” without also producing sedation and thereafter nontherapeutic usage became widespread.
