Abstract
In Chapter 1 the types of steroids in vertebrates were described and pathways for their formation discussed. Certain steroids made by the adrenal/interrenal glands predominate; these are called corticosteroids. For eutherian mammals, they are aldosterone and Cortisol, though rodents are generally corticosterone secretors; for Amphibia, reptiles and birds, aldosterone and corticosterone; for bony fish, tele-osts, Cortisol; and for cartilaginous fish, elasmobranchs, a special compound, discussed in Chapter 1, the unusual 1α-hydroxycorticosterone. In Pisces, that is, all groups of fish, the occurrence of aldosterone is dubious. All these hormones are formed in steroidogenic cells very similar to those described in Chapter 2 for the gonads. Morphologically these cells are gathered together and make up the adrenal and interrenal. In all classes, with the exception of the elasmobranchs, there are loose or close relationships with chromaffin tissue.
