Abstract

The physics of b-quarks is investigated at several different types of machines. Hadron and e-p colliders probe the production cross section of heavy quarks (charm, beauty and top) and give us insight into the gluon and quark structure functions of nucleons and test QCD calculations. The weak couplings of the Z° to c-, and b-quarks and τ-leptons are precisely measured at LEP. In e+e-colliders operating at the threshold of \(B\bar B\)-meson production (around 10 GeV center of mass) the properties of the weak decays of B-mesons and τ-leptons themselves are best studied. Table 1 gives a comparison of the production rates at various machines. Hadron colliders give the highest rates but the trigger times the reconstruction efficiency at e+e-colliders is with present detector and trigger technology several orders of magnitudes superior to hadron colliders. This holds in particular for B-decays with a high charged multiplicity or with neutral particles and for the reconstruction of \(B\bar B\) meson pairs in the same event.
