Abstract
In our discussion of work structures, markets, and processes, we have attempted to incorporate relevant materials from several disciplines, including sociology, economics, history, industrial relations, business, and political science. The complexity and diversity of phenomena related to our broad topic demand such electicism, hazardous as that practice may often be. We have also tried to include in our discussions of various topics both the older, classic statements of these issues as well as the major recent treatments. Fortunately our forebearers, like our contemporaries, have been attending to relevant segments of each others’ disciplines, a fact that imposes some significant orders of discipline that reduce the risks of dilettantism.
