Abstract
Dr. Cohen tells of an 80-year-old childless widow who sought psychiatric treatment for the first time because of the death of a close friend and increased concerns about loneliness. We suggest that this was as appropriate a time in life for an initial psychiatric contact as any other because the need grew out of feelings generated by a major developmental theme of late adulthood and led to the onset of symptoms, primarily anxiety and depression.
