How realistic were the comments and criticisms made in the last chapter by those involved in providing, managing and planning services for dementing elderly people? To test the reality of their comments, a sample of dementing elderly people were identified and their ‘dementia careers’ traced and reconstructed. Relatives and other informal carers were not approached due to the practical constraints of time and resources, and because the views of relatives have been sought by several other enquiries (e.g. Levin et al., 1983; Gilleard, 1984, Gilhooly, 1984; George and Gwyther, 1986).
