Abstract
Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) was the firstly widely reported major opportunistic infection of the AIDS epidemic (Gottblieb et al., 1981). Its importance has never diminished and it has remained one of the commonest AIDS events in the developed world (Hoover et al., 1993). The recognition that it is an early and (with prophylaxis) often avoidable AIDS illness has promoted an increased interest in its presentation and management. The improved survival times that are now seen following an episode of PCP have accounted almost exclusively for the increase in overall AIDS survival (Jacobson et al., 1993). The prophylaxis and treatment of PCP is therefore a vital part of current HIV management. This chapter addresses drug therapy as it applies to clinical practice. It also covers management strategies and ventilatory support; it concludes with a discussion of factors that predict clinical outcome.
