The immunosuppressive effects of blood

  • Chapter
Blood, Blood Products — and AIDS —

Abstract

The role of blood transfusion in the development of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is two-fold. Firstly, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may be directly transmitted by a blood transfusion and secondly, there is evidence that transfusions can suppress the immune response in several ways and may predispose the recipient to HIV infection.
