Abstract

A picture painted by Hubert von Herkomer, RA, in 1878 shows a group of old ladies in what appears to be the large hall of an institution. It is entitled ‘Eventide’ (Figure 6.1) and illustrates succinctly the attitudes of society to elderly people at that time. Although there are charming, though toothless, smiles on some of the faces, the general impression is one of hope abandoned and apathetic acceptance of what the bleak, comfortless room offers.
