Abstract
The use of purposeful activity in the long-stay ward is now increasingly common. Education has been shown to be a most effective medium for this, as it is the structuring of experience which leads to the development of human capacity. The essence of this kind of experience is that it is intended, is purposeful, and is adjusted to the changing abilities of the learner. At each step in the process the learner is motivated to respond to specific stimuli. It is the nature of the response which develops capacity. This development enables the learner to experience even more widely, to acquire more knowledge or more skill: it can lead to profound change.
