Abstract

Cleavage is the process of cell division by whic the egg becomes divided into blastomeres. The first cleavage of the egg, which divides it into two cells, is the one which has been studied most. First cleavage in the amphibian is vertica and usually divides the egg along the future antero-posterior axis of the embryo. An inden tation furrow forms at the animal pole and gradually extends around and through to the vegetal pole, thus dividing the egg into two (Fig. 5.1.).
