Abstract

Head injury is a leading cause of death in children and young adults. Remember that, in order to achieve a good outcome — or the best possible outcome given the severity of the brain damage — your patient requires:
  • effective initial resuscitation in the field;

  • rapid diagnosis and treatment in Accident and Emergency/primary surgical unit;

  • appropriate neurosurgical referral;

  • neurosurgical intensive care.
