Abstract

Many different adaptive techniques are available to both therapists and clients to maintain independence and reduce the impact of rheumatoid disease on functional ability. These techniques can be used as components of self management programmes or on their own, in a group setting or on an individual basis. They are not only a means of maintaining function but also of enabling clients to achieve a sense of control over their disease. The ways in which rheumatoid disease can lead to feelings of helplessness have already been discussed and these techniques present practical ways in which a degree of control, no matter how small, can be achieved.
