Abstract
This chapter provides practical information concerning the methods of tackling the various psychological causes for sexual difficulties. The approach taken is one in which a cognitive-behavioural perspective is applied within the context of the couple’s general relationship. Such an approach emphasizes the need to consider cognitive factors during assessment and treatment, rather than focusing purely on overt aspects of sexual functioning. It also acknowledges that sexual behaviour is just one aspect of the couple’s relationship, which should be viewed from the perspective of a system in which each individual constantly influences the other. Whereas the cognitive behavioural approach is seen to be important in understanding the behaviour of each member of the partnership, it is also recognized that all aspects of sexual behaviour occur within the context of the couple’s relationship. Sexual behaviour is generally the result of two individuals interacting together. Furthermore, sexual activity also occurs within the context of the family (and all the complex factors that this brings with it) and is also subject to cultural and societal influences, as outlined in Figure 5.1. These sources of influence, and the way in which they interact with each other, are important considerations throughout the therapy process.
