Abstract
The main reason for radiographic examination of the ribs is to exclude the presence of a pneumothorax caused by a fractured rib penetrating the underlying lung. The fact that the ribs are fractured is of secondary importance. For this reason a chest X-ray must always be carried out and in many departmental protocols this is the only projection required following injury to the ribs.
