Abstract
Medical technology and nursing care have advanced to the position where people survive injuries and diseases which would once have been fatal. However, once the person has progressed to the point where his or her life is no longer in danger they and their families are faced with an enormous task of adaptation to an entirely new mode of living. Such adjustment is necessary if the life which has been saved is to possess any quality at all. This process of adjustment can be defined as a process employed toward the goal of achieving harmony between the person and the new circumstances (Trieschmann, 1980a). In the terms used in this book it can be seen as a process of coping.
