Abstract
The mechanical properties of materials can be controlled by addition of point defects such as substitutional and interstitial atoms. Particularly in metals, the point defects disturb the atomic arrangement in the lattice and interfere with the movement of dislocations, or slip. The point defects therefore cause the material to be solid solution strengthened.
