Abstract
Many of the rheumatic diseases exhibit a number of different clinical signs and symptoms. These are frequently related to multiple anatomical sites and in addition, there may be abnormalities in laboratory tests, on radiographic examination and in other specialized investigations. As a result ’batteries’ of assessments have evolved and the reader of clinical trial reports on antirheumatic drugs is usually confronted with a complex array of data, comprising various individual measurements, both subjective and objective. It is thus difficult to obtain a comprehensive evaluation of therapy and even when the individual measurements are combined to produce composite indices the overall picture is often far from clear. This is in sharp contrast with many other disorders; for example, hypertension in which one primary measurement is used, both in clinical trials and clinical practice, to assess response to drug therapy.
