Tumours of the Central Nervous System

  • Chapter

Abstract

In general, children with brain tumours are referred to oncological units for adjuvant treatment from neurosurgical centres were the diagnosis has already been established and any surgical treatment completed. This chapter will therefore be concerned mainly with treatment and the emphasis will be on the role of radiotherapy since in recent vears this modality, given postoperatively or as the sole treatment for inoperable cases, is producing improved survival rates. With the extension of life following such treatment it is only natural that there has been anxiety over possible late effects.
