Model Cellulose Compounds. Unmodified Celluloses

  • Chapter
Infrared Spectra of Cellulose and its Derivatives

Abstract

In order to apply infrared spectroscopy effectively to the study of the structures of cellulose and its derivatives, and of the mechanisms of their reactions, it is first necessary to interpret the main infrared absorption bands. For this purpose it is convenient to begin with an investigation of the infrared spectra of various types of mono-, di-, and polysaccharides. These compounds have structural elements which are very similar to those of cellulose and may therefore be considered as model compounds for cellulose and its derivatives.
