Abstract

The angular anisotropy of the fragments produced in the photofission of nuclei with odd atomic weights was studied in [1, 2]. A dipole character was assumed for the absorption of the y-quanta, and in all cases the yield ratio I(θ = 90°)/I(θ = 0°) was measured, θ being the angle relative to the direction of the γ-ray beam. In view of the controversial role of the quadrupole absorption of γ-quanta in the photofission process, it was considered desirable to check the isotropy of the distribution for such nuclei over a wide angular range.

This paper describes research work carried out in 1958 and 1959 in the Photonuclear-Reaction Laboratory.
