Abstract
There is practically no literature information on how the dimensions of the reaction zone and the geometrical shape of the reaction path affect the cracking of methane in an arc in dynamic conditions. Nevertheless, the geometry of the reaction space is both qualitatively and quantitatively important in the process, for it is this factor which determines the reaction time τ, and with given τ but differently shaped discharge chambers and reaction channels it may affect the electrical and gas-dynamic conditions of the discharge, and hence also the process as a whole. Movement of gas in the reactor governs the shape of the arc (elongates it and stabilizes it), effects contact of the gas with the active zone, and (what is very important) carries solid products (soot) away from the reaction zone.
