Abstract

In order to review the pharmacological treatment of school phobia, a number of clinical and behavioral issues should be examined. The purpose of studying school phobia is to establish a model from which anxiety disorders can be better understood. The scientific study of school phobia allows for a better conceptualization of the underlying diagnostic problems, classification issues, severity ratings, family functioning, behavioral genetics, outcome, and eventually treatment. Historically the assumption has been that school phobia was synonymous with separation anxiety disorder (Kolvin, Berney, & Bhatz, 1984). It is likely that this assumption will have to be reexamined and possibly discarded.
