Abstract

It is fairly well established that three mammalian mitochondrial dehydrogenases, the NAD+-isocitrate dehydrogenase, the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex, and 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase complex are activated by Ca2+ ions in the micromolar range (Denton and McCormack, 1980, 1981; Hansford, 1985). While Ca2+ ions increase the amount of the pyruvate dehydrogenase in the active form due to activation of pyruvate dehydrogenase phosphatase, activation of the 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase and NAD+-isocitrate dehydrogenase is the result of decreased Km for their substrates, 2-oxoglutarate and isocitrate, respectively (Denton et al, 1978; McCormack and Denton, 1979).
