Is Electron Transfer Mediated by Random Diffusion Alone?

  • Chapter
Integration of Mitochondrial Function

Abstract

In the past few years several research groups have measured the diffusion coefficients of components of the respiratory chain in mitochondrial inner membranes (Kawato et al., 1980, 1982; Hochman et al., 1982, 1985; Sowers and Hackenbrock, 1981; Hackenbrock et al., 1986; Vanderkooi et al., 1985; Lenaz and Fato, 1986; Fato et al., 1986). The objective has been to gain insight into the mechanics of electron transfer and the mobility characteristics of this membrane-associated system that may be important in determining the rates and regulation of electron and energy transfer. A major issue is whether this somewhat unusual membrane can best be described as a homogeneous system with randomly diffusing components, or whether it is necessary to invoke a more complex, non-random organization.
