Endocytosis and Heterophagy

Lysosomes

Part of the book series: Cellular Organelles ((CORG))

Abstract

Lysosomes have been studied most extensively in the context of heterophagy (Fig. 2.1). This is so partly because there are readily obtainable cell types, like the mammalian phagocytes or protozoa, that show elaborate heterophagic apparatus, and use their lysosomes for easily identifiable, major cellular activities. Important phases of these activities can be studied in living cells. Moreover, heterophagic structures are accessible to many materials introduced into the extracellular environment, and this has greatly facilitated experimentation.
