The Evolution of the Tiered Principal Retinae of Jumping Spiders (Araneae: Salticidae)

  • Chapter
Neurobiology of Sensory Systems

Abstract

A unique sensory structure with an unusual modus operandi always poses a challenge to a biologist concerned with the fine-print of Evolution. The principal eyes of Salticid spiders offer just such a challenge. This short Review will identify its nature, summarise the outcome of new findings achieved in the last eight years, and outline some new ones.
