The Magnetic Stratigraphy of the Late Miocene Sediments of the Cabriel Basin, Spain

Abstract

In recent years, much progress has been made in America and Asia (Pakistan) in understanding the age range of the Neogene vertebrate faunas and the migration pattern between these continents. This has been achieved through the application of magnetic stratigraphy to mammal-bearing sequences of these regions. Unfortunately, in western Europe the placement of the classic mammal-bearing sequences into the Magnetic Polarity Time Scale (MPTS) has not progressed so rapidly. One reason for this lack of progress is the fact that sedimentary exposures in Europe are often poor, making the application of magnetic stratigraphic techniques difficult.
