Elastic Properties of High Temperature Superconductors Derived from High Pressure Experiments

Abstract

Many investigations of the elastic properties of high Tc superconductors (HTSC) have been performed under high pressure. For any type of HTSC the results of these investigations are widely spread. For example the bulk modulus of YBa2Cu3O7 varies between 100 GPa and 200 GPa, depending on the experiment — and when calculated from ultra-sound experiments the bulk modulus turns out to be lower than 100 GPa. At the moment these uncertainties cannot be eliminated, but the exact knowledge of the elastic properties of HTSC would be highly interesting, because of the pronounced effect of pressure on the superconducting transition temperature Tc of some HTSC. The pressure effect on Tc is not the main topic of this paper. dTc/dP has been reviewed in ‘High Pressure Studies’ by Wijngaarden and Griessen (1989). Our paper will give a review of high pressure experiments on various high Tc superconductors with special regard to elastic properties and a discussion of the uncertainties.
