Overview of Fuel Cell Technology

  • Chapter
Fuel Cell Systems

Abstract

The fuel cell is an electrochemical device which converts the free-energy change of an electrochemical reaction (AGO) into electrical energy. One may thus write the expression

$$\Delta G^ \circ = nFE_r^ \circ$$
((2.1))

, where \(E_r^ \circ\) is the reversible potential of the cell. The simplest and most commonly encountered fuel cell reaction is

$${\text{H}}_2 + \frac{1} {2}{\text{o}}_2 = {\text{H}}_2 {\text{o}}$$
((2.2))

.
