Abstract
Although low-temperature microscopy and analysis are not solely associated with hydrated systems, most studies are concerned with systems where water, either as ice or amorphous water, is an important structural component. For this reason, water merits special attention and it is necessary to appreciate some basic facts about the compound, first at normal temperatures and pressures, and then at low temperatures.
