Abstract

In 1975, Roviello and Sirigu 1, prepared new polyalkanoates from p,p′-dihydroxy-α,α′-di-methylbenzalazine and appropriate acyl chlorides. All the examined polymers melted to give fluid anisotropic phases whose textures and properties appeared quite similar to those observed with conventional liquid crystals, hence the denomination of “thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers”. The discovery of these new polymeric materials was a stimulating event in macro-molecular science not only because of their potential as high strength fibers but also because of their academic interest in the theoretical scheme of structural order in fluid phases. In the past few years a search for newer and newer liquid crystalline polymers containing mesomorphic groups in the side chain or incorporated in the main chain has begun on a much wider scale. Surprisingly there have been few papers devoted to the study of their structures as liquid crystalline phases. So far, the liquid crystals formed by heating these polymers have been classified broadly as nematic, smectic, cholesteric or twisted smectic. Identification of the type of mesophase is thus an important step in the characterization of these materials. The more definitive procedures use for classification of low molecular weight liquid crystals are 2–5:
