Definition of Learning Disabilities: A Clinical Approach

  • Chapter
Theory and Research in Learning Disabilities

Abstract

Defining learning disabilities is a thankless task. Nevertheless, it is necessary for the conduct of meaningful research, accurate diagnosis, and effective remediation. Some of the current definitions have been criticized for their use of exclusionary criteria, questionable statistical procedures, and ambiguities in terminology. It is helpful to examine the clinical implications of each of these criticisms.
