Electrochemistry of Metallaboron Cage Compounds

  • Chapter
Metal Interactions with Boron Clusters

Part of the book series: Modern Inorganic Chemistry ((MICE))

Abstract

The first mention of voltammetric measurements on transition metalcarboranes or metal-boranes seems to be that found in the 1965 note(1) describing the preparation of the first metal dicarbollide compound, (C2B9H11)2 Fe. Although no data were given, it was stated that the polarographic reduction of the monoanion gave the corresponding dianion. Since that time, Hawthorne et al. have reported electrochemical data, usually via cyclic voltammetry measurements, in surveying the physical properties of most of the metallacarboranes they have synthesized. Taken together with our data and data from other groups, we now have a moderately large body of electrochemical data on this class of compounds, and it seems timely to review this area to see what we have learned about the redox properties of metal-containing boron clusters.
