Abstract

In this chapter, we consider the directions in which intelligent automation is likely to move in the future, and highlight shortcomings that will have to be overcome to ensure continued progress. Developments in the tools of automation, both hardware and software, are considered. Areas in which the application of intelligent automation is likely to expand are suggested. The chapter concludes by speculating as to whether there exists any fundamental limitation to what intelligent automation might ultimately achieve.
