Abstract

With the assembled genes that, along with possible ancestral types, provide the topic of the present chapter, the extreme pinnacle of complexity of gene organization is reached. Not even the intricacies of posttranslational cleavages that characterized the cistrons of complement factor C3, for instance, can approach those involved in the formation of the final gene structures of the immunoglobulins, the prime example of this class of genomic constituents. Despite their thus being the most elaborately constructed of all genetic determinants, those proteins nevertheless provide the best medium for introducing the present subject, for an abundance of data at the molecular level is available concerning them that cannot begin to be matched by simpler representatives of the group from whatever source.
