Cerebral-Brainstem Relations in Infantile Autism

Neurobiological Issues in Autism

Part of the book series: Current Issues in Autism ((CIAM))

Abstract

In infantile autism, many higher mental functions of the cerebrum are grossly abnormal, and yet direct evidence of cerebral damage has proven elusive. I shall attempt to resolve this contradiction by arguing that the functional cerebral deficiencies are secondary to impairments of ascending activation. I first consider ascending activation, then hemisphere function, and finally relations between them.
