Abstract
Research on CNS and pituitary proteinases and tissue proteolytic enzymes in general is expanding at an accelerating rate. Although in the past this group of enzymes has been frequently credited merely with the task of degrading proteins, it is now recognized that proteinases perform a variety of vital cellular functions. Protein synthesis and degradation, the two opposing processes in protein turnover, are governed by a complex control mechanism that must include strict regulation of the function of proteolytic enzymes. The importance of peptide hormones and neuropeptides in the function of the CNS has focused attention on the role of proteinases in the formation and degradation of these potent substances.
