Enzymes of Lipid Metabolism

Abstract

The study of enzymes that metabolize lipids in brain is still in its infancy. Since most complex lipids are integral components of the brain membrane, one major function of the lipid-metabolizing enzymes is to regulate the metabolic turnover of the membrane lipids.1 Most of the lipid enzymes are highly regulated by factors such as divalent cations, cofactor requirements, and availability of endogenous substrates.2 With few exceptions, the enzymes present in brain are also found in extraneural tissues, although activity of the brain enzymes is normally much lower than that in the peripheral organs.
