The Status of Psychotherapy Integration
The science and profession of psychotherapy has had a relatively brief but stormy history. The organized practice of individual psychotherapy, with all of its associated theories and controversies, is essentially only about 100 years old. During that time any number of psychotherapy systems, traditions, or sectarian schools have flourished. Like political or religious entities, these schools typically have scoffed at the ideas and methods of each other. Psychotherapists have always been interested in, and have attempted to utilize, new developments in the natural and social sciences, philosophy, theology, the arts, and literature. However, for the most part, they have refused to learn from each other if their ideologies and allegiances are different.
