Abstract

The multifactorial nature of memory processing may be responsible for its particular vulnerability to disruption as individuals age (Craik, 1986; Moscovitch & Winocur, 1992). Memory “loss” is the most common cognitive complaint among healthy elderly (Chaffin & Herrmann, 1983; Sunderland, Watts, Baddeley, & Harris, 1986), and it is also the hallmark of many forms of progressive dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) (Albert & Moss, 1988; Nebes, 1992). As a result, attempts have been made over recent years to develop and apply methods to improve the memory functioning of normal elderly individuals and to remediate the memory deficits (and the effects on daily living) of demented patients.
