Abstract
The cardiovascular dysfunctions associated with Gram positive or Gram negative septic shock are comparable. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is considered as the single contributor involved in eliciting Gram negative sepsis. LPS itself and/or through releasing cytokines causes expression of inducible NO-synthase (i-NOS). Overproduction of nitric oxide (NO) as a result of i-NOS activity in vascular tissues contributes greatly to hypotension and hyporeactivity associated with endotoxinic shock.
