Physiological Behavior of Functional Subpopulations of Single Pancreatic β-Cells

  • Chapter
Book cover Physiology and Pathophysiology of the Islets of Langerhans

Abstract

Single pancreatic β-cells are heterogeneous, the following are observations of β-cell variability: insulin content and biosynthesis of individual β-cells (Pipeleers, 1987; Schuit et al., 1988), glucose transport (Tominaga et al., 1986), electrical activity (Dean and Mattews, 1970; Ashcroft et al., 1987) and insulin secretion (Salomon and Meda, 1986; Hiriart and Matteson, 1988; Hiriart and Ramirez-Medeles, 1991; Van Schravendijk et al., 1992).
