Glial and Neuronal Expression of Cyclooxygenase-2: Relevance to Alzheimer’S Disease

Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia in the elderly, affecting over 4 million individuals in the United States at an estimated annual cost of $100 billion. AD typically presents with memory loss followed by progressive cognitive deterioration over a period of 5 to 10 years. This clinical pattern is mirrored by neuropathology first in the hippocampus and associated structures with later involvement of cortical regions and some subcortical nuclei. Recent research efforts have lead to significant advances in our understanding of the genetics and pathological hallmarks of AD. However, we still do not understand the cause(s) of this disease, and current therapeutic interventions do not influence the overall progression of AD.
