Abstract
Bacteriophage φX174 is a small icosahedral virus, of particle weight 6.2 × 106 daltons, which grows on certain strains of Escherichia coli. The genetic material is a single-stranded, circular DNA of molecular weight 1.7 × 106 daltons (about 5500 nucleotides). During its replication, the single-stranded viral DNA (SS DNA) is converted to a double-stranded “replicative form” DNA (RF DNA) from which the progeny single strands are produced.
