Abstract
Wnt genes are members of a family of vertebrate genes related to the Drosophila gene wingless (wg, Nusse and Warmus, 1992; McMahon, 1992). They encode secreted molecules (Papkoff and Schryver, 1990; Jue et al, 1992) which are thought to be of importance in patterning and growth control during ontogenesis (McMahon and Bradley, 1990; Thomas et al, 1992; Thomas and Capecchi, 1990; Dickinson et al, 1994). Several such genes are transcribed in localised domains during limb budding and morphogenesis (McMahon, 1992; Gavin et al, 1990; Dealy et al, 1993). We report here further observations on a congenital limb malformation in a mouse transgenic line that ectopically expresses Wnt-1 in limb buds (Zakany and Duboule, 1993).
