Abstract

The Pax gene family consists of nine genes identified in the mouse genome by their homology to the Drosophila segmentation gene, paired. The Pax gene products have the biochemical properties of transcription factors and share the conserved paired domain that exhibits DNA binding activity. Pax genes are expressed in temporally and spatially restricted patterns during embryogenesis and control key aspects of embryonic development. Pax gene mutations are semidominantly inherited, and homozygous mouse mutants are usually lethal.
