Testing Winter Desiccation Resistance for Species and Provenance Selection at Timberlines

Forest Development in Cold Climates

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 244))

Abstract

High cuticular water loss leading to tree desiccation and leaf mortality is a predomĀinant ecophysiological factor in determining plant growth and survival at timberlines (Hadley and Smith, 1990; Larcher, 1957; Sakai, 1970). Resistance to winter desiccation might, therefore, be important for the survival and development of trees at the alpine and boreal timberline, and an important trait for species and provenance selection in tree breeding at timberlines.
