Abstract
This paper focuses more on theoretical deductions than on empirical results, and deals more with long-term strategies than with short-term tactics. Speculation about breeding for tree-limit conditions is an interesting challenge and intellectual exercise, but under many circumstances it is hardly realistic. I reflect about what the tree limit environment and adaptation should be, although some of these reflections might be dubious or oversimplified. In addition, I identify patterns of adaptation to the tree-limit environment, with the caveat that several of these patterns can be challenged by exceptions.
